Call 811 Before Digging in Florida

In Florida you must contact Sunshine 811 at least 2 full business days before you dig or demolish. It is free. The only homeowner exemption is digging no deeper than 10 inches on your own single family lot, so any machine digging needs a ticket. Tickets are valid for 30 calendar days.

How to do it

  1. Mark your dig area in white (paint or flags) so locators know where you plan to dig.
  2. Call 811 or submit a ticket online through Sunshine 811 at least 2 full business days ahead.
  3. Wait for the marks and check the ticket status before you start.
  4. Hand dig near the marks. The real line can be anywhere within 24 inches of the paint.
  5. Keep the marks visible. Removing them on purpose is a crime under the same law.
